October Fall Break Ride
Kathy spoke about the plans for Fall Break. She felt it was the right time to do something different from a normal ride into Arkansas. So, she has come up with a 3-day ride on old Route 66. She’s even come up with a slogan, “Get Your Kicks on Route 66 !!!” Really creative, huh?
We will leave early Friday morning heading to Edmond to pick up Route 66. First night will be in Claremore. We’ll get there early enough to visit the Will Rogers Museum and other attractions. The next morning we head up to Miami early in the morning. This makes two early mornings in a row! There are many places where we can visit up in that area. We’ll also head to Grove to visit Har-Ber Village.
T-Shirts
Seems Altus has “lost” our original screens. So Kathy is looking for a place that can recreate our graphics. Grant ask Bill Baxter if Great Plains could do something like this. Bill nodded his head saying that they should be able to do something.
Kathy got online and found a place where she designed a T-Shirt. She has ordered a whole bunch of them and should be in her hands within a week or so. She just ordered gray colors this time. If you want a different color, let Kathy know.
Gold Wing Plaque
The plaque informing the public that we meet at this location has arrived. Grant will ask the manager for the spot to hang it on the wall.
Chapter “W” Anniversary
Kathy thought it would be good to go to visit them at this time located at Red Rock State Park. This will be Saturday, September 20th.
Shawnee Honda
Darliene thought it would be good to plan a Saturday ride where we can stop at Shawnee Honda to look around to see what they have. They are the #2 Honda dealer in the country selling an average of 600 Honda cycles every month!
Looks as if we may expand our Dinner Ride on the 27th. Leave earlier that Saturday at 10:00 am from Cracker Barrel. We’ll eat hot dogs up at the Honda place, then we’ll eat supper at Pops later in the afternoon.
Tom & Paula’s Vacation Ride
Tom and Paula rode 2590 miles on their Michigan ride. Only had a couple times of some rain. They had 5 wonderful days in Michigan visiting family and friends.
They went to Mammouth Cave spending two nights there. They took 3 days coming back by way of the back highways and enjoyed all of it.
Richard Mear’s Trip
First night they stopped at Garden City, Kansas. They arrived in Canon City, Colorado with the temperature at 105º that Tuesday afternoon. No campiung this night - they got a motel room! Next morning at 5 am the temp was still around 75º when they took off. Two hours later when they hit the mountains, the temperature was 42º. Of course, Susie was constantly telling Richard just how cold it was to her as she sat behind him.
About half way up to Breckenridge, Richard saw a bear. Got on the CB to let his sister know behind them that there was a bear. Next thing he hears is Susie yelling “GO GO GO GO !!!” Richard didn’t even have time to let her know the bear was over a mile away. Yet, when he told her this, she said, “He could run!” At this point she quit complaining about the cold.
They stayed in the area about a week visiting Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, etc.
Rider Education by Max
Rally Classes
Trike Course - Max mentioned that there is a Trike Course up at the District Rally at a cost of $35 per bike. The course is limited to only 12 cycles. If interested you need to call tonight.
Also, CPR classes and First Aid classes will be up at the Rally. These classes are one of the requirements for Level III and Level IV certification.
Motorcycle Accidents
The Lawton Constitution has had several good articles about motorcycle riding. One article mentioned that motorcycle riders have a higher percentage rating of riders killed due to intoxication of alcohol. Much of this can be associated with our “other friends” on those noisy cycles. 60% of these occur at night. As we get older our eyesight begins to fail, reaction time is longer. These are some things to consider as we ride.
LPD investigated 59 motorcycle-involved accidents between Jan 1st thru August 13th of this year. More and more people are buying motorcycles now. Women are the fastest growing buyers of motorcycles.
What the police are seeing in these crashes are the young soldiers with lots of money in their pockets buying these crotch rockets. They’re in for the thrill and haven’t had any training in riding the right way. These people are involved in crashes and in some cases end up as a fatality.
Motorcycle Safety Foundation
Go to their website to look at pieces of their Basic Riding Course, Experienced Rider Course and Group Riding. This would be something worthwhile to check.
District Rally Table
Kathy said we’ll be advertising our Chapter up at the District Rally. Last year we won first place for the Best Newsletter and for the Best Mascot. This year we have nothing new to brag about so if anyone has any suggestions, let Kathy know.
This year the District is asking each Chapter to provide a history of their chapter. If anyone can remember anything about the past seven years let
Sharon is still working on the Scrapbook, so if you have anything to give her, get the items to her soon.
